Coach Raffo became Principal at Marion County in the 2004-2005 school year
after 32 years as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal. After many years
as head baseball coach the field was named Al Raffo Field in 2001. You can pics
of the field in the baseball section. Below is some background information with
Mr. Raffo.
Favorite Coaching Year
1990 Runner-up in State Tournament a year after we were prohibited from advancing
from the district tournament.
The hardest thing about giving up coaching:
Loss of contact with the young players who loved the sport and just not being
able to be out on that green field under a blue sky on a nice day, competing
against a team in a game that has been so much a part of your life.
Some Background including Baseball History:
I was raised in California, went to high school in Los Angeles (L.A. High,
2,700 in 10, 11, 12th) and played baseball.
I signed with the Phillies in '62 and went to Miami, FL my first year. Played
in minors and met my wife-to-be, Nancy, while playing for the Chatanooga Lookouts
in '65. We were married in '66. I played in the majors for Philadelphia in '69,
then was sent down to AAA and left baseball in '71 to return to college.
I received a degree in Spanish from U.T.C. in '73 and not long after I began
teaching.
My son, Greg, is a school counselor in Murfreesboro, TN and my daughter, Angie,
is a middle school teacher in Jasper.
We have three grandchildren, Lucas Raffo, Branden and Ansley Blevins.
